10 Web Design Mistakes Nigerian Businesses Make (And How to Fix Them)
Your Website Might Be Costing You Customers
A bad website is worse than no website. It signals neglect, erodes trust, and drives away the very customers you are spending money to attract. At Topnet Technologies, we audit hundreds of Nigerian business websites every year. Here are the ten most common mistakes we see — and how to fix them.
1. Not Mobile-Responsive
Over 80% of Nigerian internet users browse on mobile. If your website looks broken on a phone, you are losing the majority of your visitors before they read a single word. Fix: Rebuild with a mobile-first responsive framework.
2. Slow Load Times
Nigerian internet connections vary widely. A site that loads in 2 seconds in Lagos on fibre may take 12 seconds on 4G in Ibadan. Uncompressed images are almost always the culprit. Fix: Compress all images (use WebP format), enable browser caching, and use a CDN.
3. No Clear Call to Action
Visitors come to your site — then leave because they do not know what to do next. Fix: Every page needs one clear primary CTA: "Call Us Now," "Get a Quote," "Shop Now."
4. Generic Stock Photography
Using the same stock photos as a thousand other businesses makes your brand invisible. Fix: Invest in real photographs of your team, your office, your products. Authenticity converts.
5. No SSL Certificate (HTTP Instead of HTTPS)
Google Chrome flags HTTP sites as "Not Secure." This destroys trust instantly. Fix: Install a free Let's Encrypt SSL certificate. Most Nigerian hosting providers offer this in cPanel.
6. Outdated Copyright Year in the Footer
A footer that says "© 2019" tells visitors your site has not been touched in years. Fix: Use PHP to output the current year dynamically: <?php echo date('Y'); ?>
7. No Google Analytics
If you cannot measure your traffic, you cannot improve it. Fix: Install Google Analytics 4 — it is free and takes 15 minutes to set up.
8. Poor Contact Information Visibility
Visitors should never have to hunt for your phone number or address. Fix: Put your primary contact number in the header on every page, and have a dedicated Contact page that is easy to find.
9. No Blog or Content Strategy
Your competitors who blog consistently will outrank you on Google over time. Fix: Publish at least two quality blog posts per month targeting keywords your customers search for.
10. Hosting on Poor Infrastructure
Cheap shared hosting causes downtime, slow speeds, and security vulnerabilities. Fix: Move to a reputable Nigerian or international VPS host. The extra ₦5,000/month is worth it.
How Many Apply to Your Site?
If more than three of these apply to your current website, it is time for a professional audit. Contact Topnet for a free website review.
